Which Films to See at Filmekimi?
Filmekimi is approaching and the most remarkable films of this year, carefully selected by İKSV, are waiting for you! We have compiled some popular and recommended movies for you; get ready for an October full of unforgettable and pleasant memories.
Poor Things
After his masterpiece "The Favourite" five years ago, Golden Lion-winning director Yorgos Lanthimos returns with another period film and another fascinating story. This time, Emma Stone plays the character of Bella Baxter, who is resurrected from the dead during the Victorian era.
In the film, Godwin Baxter, a genius doctor known for his extraordinary methods, resurrects Bella, just as Dr. Frankenstein did. Seeing the world with new eyes, Bella joins hands with a charismatic lawyer and embarks on an intercontinental adventure. In this process, Bella becomes a defender of equality and freedom, freeing herself from the prejudices and oppressive social structure of the period.
Yorgos Lanthimos' new film is also notable for its star-studded cast. The screenplay was written by Tony McNamara, the man behind successful films such as "The Court favorite" and "Cruella", and adapted from Alasdair Gray's 1992 novel. This extraordinary and impressive story is getting ready to meet moviegoers at Filmekimi 2023!
Perfect Days
Master director Wim Wenders, who has made many films inspired by the unique atmosphere of cities, this time centers on a real urban renewal project called "Tokyo Toilet" and draws the audience into a story that is both poetic and poignant. Kôji Yakusho, the superstar of Japanese cinema, successfully portrays the protagonist Hirayama in this unforgettable film.
The film focuses on the life of Hirayama, a familiar public restroom cleaner. Although Hirayama is just a janitor, he does his job with great diligence, dedication and pride. His seemingly monotonous, repetitive daily routines are transformed into a work of art, a respectable tradition in harmony with his surroundings. Through unexpected events and encounters, the film takes the audience into Hirayama's past and inner world, making the audience think.
"Perfect Days" is named after Lou Reed's unforgettable song "Perfect Day" and the film traces the search for a calm and peaceful happiness filled with ordinary beauty. Among the small miracles of everyday life, details such as music cassettes, sunlight filtering through the trees and books invite the audience to discover the beauty of existence and life. This profound and moving film is also Japan's Oscar nominee and is definitely not to be missed.
The Zone of Interest
"The Zone of Interest" explores the life of Auschwitz camp commandant Rudolf Höss and his family during one of the darkest periods in history. The Höss family lives a dreamlike life in their magnificent home, right next to the death camp, between the train tracks and the gas chambers. These days with his wife Hedwig, his children and servants are filled with moments of relaxation in flower-filled gardens, greenhouses and pools.
But this film reveals the dark truths behind their 'ordinary' lives, in contrast to the tragedies unfolding before their very eyes. Based on the novel of the same name by Martin Amis, this is Jonathan Glazer's return to cinema after ten years and his next major work after "Under the Skin".
By focusing on the everyday life of the Höss family and the terrifying walls of Auschwitz, "The Zone of Interest" offers a profound, unusual and blood-curdling perspective on the banality of evil and the contradictions of human nature. The film was selected as the UK's Oscar nominee this year and invites audiences to witness one of the darkest periods of history from a different perspective.
Yellowed Leaves - Kuolleet Lehdet - Fallen Leaves
Master director Aki Kaurismäki returns with his latest film, which won the hearts of audiences at the Cannes Film Festival. "Yellow Leaves" is a profound romantic comedy with sweet and sad tones. The movie centers on the chance meeting of two strangers in the cold and magical nights of Helsinki, looking for the first, only and last love of their lives.
However, this romantic story is full of unexpected obstacles. The man's drinking problems, lost phone numbers, not even knowing each other's names and the challenging nature of life make it difficult for the two characters to reach each other. "Yellow Leaves" is an elegant blend of tragedy and comedy, filled with Kaurismäki's signature quiet, disjointed narrative style, Nordic humor, deep melancholy and moving songs.
This touching and hilarious story once again showcases Aki Kaurismäki's unique creativity and cinematic storytelling power. The film is Finland's Oscar nominee and promises an unmissable experience for movie lovers.
The Beast - La Bête - The Beast
The new work of director Thomas Cailley, known for "Love at First Fight", which opened the "Un Certain Regard" section of the Cannes Film Festival, is an emotionally intense film that successfully blends science fiction and action genres. At the center of the film is the transformation of humans into animals as a result of an unknown mutation. These dramatically transformed "creatures" escape deep into the forest before they are caught by the authorities.
The character François follows his wife, who has undergone an unexpected change, on a dangerous and unknown adventure with his son. In this film, director Thomas Cailley touches on deep and far-reaching themes about bodies, desire, the savage side of man, the sense of belonging, the world to be left to future generations and our common ancestry. "The movie gave me the opportunity to express and reflect on these issues that had been building up inside me," says Cailley.
Another important name in the visual design of the movie is Frédérik Peeters. The Swiss comic book artist is responsible for the design of the film's animal characters, bringing a range of animal species from mammals to arthropods to the big screen. Peeters' detailed and original designs enrich the visual language of the film and invite the audience to an unexpected visual feast. This impressive and thought-provoking movie takes the audience on a different kind of imaginative adventure.
